One way to tell if your vehicle is about to run out of gas is that the engine will start sputtering.  If this happens, get to the side of the road as quickly and safely as possible.   Sometimes we fail to notice our gas gauge inching towards "E".  It's important to keep an eye on the gas gauge so we don't run out of gas but more importantly, to protect the vehicle against damage.  The fuel pump relies on gas for lubricating and cooling.  If the gas gauge isn't functioning properly you will want to bring the vehicle to a mechanic to fix the problem.
