There are a number of causes for a dead car battery. One of the most common is forgetting to turn off the headlights when shutting off the vehicle. 

Jumper cables are a pair of wires with insulation on them that have automotive clips on either side marked red for positive and black for negative. You will see on the car battery two terminals: one positive "+" and one negative "-" (see illustration above). Both vehicles should be shut off and placed in park when connecting jumper cables. If either vehicle happens to have an electric ignition mechanism, jumping the vehicle may damage it so always reference the owner's manual for further instructions before jump starting a vehicle yourself.
